What is a smart mortise lock?

A smart mortise lock fits its lock body inside the edge of the door, with the cylinder, latch and deadbolt mechanism mounted in a rectangular pocket rather than bolted to the surface. The 'smart' part adds RFID, fingerprint, PIN, Bluetooth or mobile-key unlocking on top of that mortise chassis, while keeping a mechanical key backup for emergencies. This makes smart mortise locks a reliable upgrade for hotels, offices and commercial access control, where the lock must look flush, survive heavy daily use and still open the traditional way when electronics fail.

Buyer Questions

Smart mortise lock FAQs from hotel & security buyers

Common questions from hotel, office and security buyers evaluating smart mortise locks — how they work, deadbolt differences, hotel selection, unlocking types, retrofit and OEM / ODM terms.

Question 1

What is a smart mortise lock?

+

A smart mortise lock embeds the lock body in a rectangular pocket cut into the door edge, mounting the cylinder, latch and deadbolt inside the door rather than on the surface. It adds RFID, fingerprint, PIN, Bluetooth or mobile-key unlocking to that mortise chassis and keeps a mechanical key backup. See our smart mortise lock guide for how it works and how to specify one.

Question 2

Smart mortise lock vs deadbolt — what's the difference?

+

A mortise lock body sits inside the door with a rectangular latch bolt and an integrated cylinder, while a deadbolt is a surface-mounted bolt that moves into a strike plate. Mortise locks suit heavier commercial and hotel doors where the latch needs to ride over a strike; deadbolts are common on residential and lighter doors. Our mortise lock guide compares the two builds for different door types.

Question 3

Which smart lock do hotels use for guest rooms?

+

Most hotels choose an RFID card mortise lock for guest rooms because the front-desk system can write and re-issue cards centrally. A typical choice is a single-latch mini mortise with RFID card and mechanical-key backup, managed by the property's door-lock software. Read our hotel door-lock selection guide or see the hotel smart lock.

Question 4

RFID vs fingerprint vs Bluetooth — which unlocking type is right?

+

RFID cards suit hotels and high-volume access; fingerprint suits frequent individual use where you want touch-free, card-free entry; Bluetooth and mobile key suit smart-home and staff-phones convenience. Each has trade-offs in enrolment, battery and management. Our fingerprint door lock selection guide and Bluetooth door lock explainer walk through the options.

Question 5

Can I retrofit a smart mortise lock on an existing door?

+

Yes, most smart mortise locks are built for retrofit. You replace the existing mortise body and keep the door prepared for a standard mortise pocket, so minimal drilling is needed. Confirm the backset, lock body size and strike geometry against the current door before ordering. Our retrofit smart lock guide covers the compatibility points.

Question 6

Are you the OEM / ODM manufacturer?

+

Yes — we are the factory. Standard models start at a MOQ of 500 pcs and OEM / ODM is negotiable, with samples in 7-10 days and mass production in 20-30 days. Production runs under CE, FCC, RoHS and ISO 9001. Browse the product range to shortlist a model, or request a quote.
